CARDIAC PACING

Abstract

Materials & Methods:

Seventy two patients had permanent pacemaker implantation Table I shows the underlying rhythm, age and sex of these patients.46 patients had temporary pacemaker inserted prior to the implantation of a permanent pacemaker. The rest of the patients were stable at the time of permanent pacemaker and were receiving isupril drip intra venously. Four of these cases ultimately had myocardial leads with power packs in the rectus sheath. One was repositioned successfully in the same pocket. Table No. 4 shows the type of device used. The single units used were generally donations from the companies concerned.

DISCUSSION:

Syncope occuring in patients with a slow heart rate due to complete heart block, commonly known as Adams—Stokes Syndrome is recognised since the time of Morgagny (1) More recently this has been described in the setting of Sick Sinus Syndrome (2) and pro-. longed QT interval associated with or without deafness (3).As shown in table 2, the average age of female patients was 10 years younger than the complete heart block group. This is because of these two post operative cases; otherwise the mean age of these patients is about. the same a those of C.H.B. cases.
